How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT
When someone asks ChatGPT "who's the best dentist near me" or "which CRM should a small team use", the answer names a handful of businesses. Getting your business onto that list is what GEO is about. This guide covers the steps that matter most, in the order I'd do them, and which parts you can hand to a tool.
The short version
1. Make sure AI search can find and read your site. 2. Answer your customers' real questions in clear pages. 3. Get mentioned on other trusted sites. 4. Keep your business facts consistent everywhere. 5. Measure what AI says about you and repeat.
How ChatGPT decides which businesses to mention
AI assistants build answers from two sources: what the model learned during training, and what it finds by searching the web at the moment you ask. You can't change the training data quickly, but you can influence what it finds and how much it trusts you.
Two things matter most. First, whether your pages are easy to find and quote. Second, whether other sites talk about you. A Muck Rack study published in May 2026, which looked at more than 25 million links cited by ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, found that 84% of citations came from earned media: articles and mentions on other people's sites, not the brands' own pages.
I'm Sergey Valums, a performance marketer with about 10 years of experience. In our client work, combining steady content with outside mentions grew organic Google traffic by about 40% in two months, and both brands started showing up more often in ChatGPT and Gemini.
Step 1: Let AI search find and read your site
- Check your robots.txt. Make sure you're not blocking AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search), PerplexityBot and Claude's crawlers. Many sites block them by accident through a security plugin or a copied template.
- Get indexed by Bing as well as Google. ChatGPT's web search draws heavily on Bing results. Add your site to Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap. It takes ten minutes.
- Keep important text in the page. Prices, services and opening hours shown only in images or behind scripts are hard for crawlers to read.
Step 2: Answer your customers' real questions
AI assistants quote pages that answer a question directly. Write down the 20 questions customers ask you before they buy, then give each one a clear answer on your site: a service page, an FAQ or a short article.
- Put the answer in the first two sentences, then the detail.
- Use real numbers: prices, timeframes, sizes, locations you serve.
- Add comparison and "how to choose" pages. They're what people ask AI most before buying.
The shortcut: this is the part content tools automate. BabyLoveGrowth, Soro and AutoSEO research your customers' questions and publish articles to your site every day. Read them before they go live and add one detail only you know.
Step 3: Get mentioned on other trusted sites
This is the step most businesses skip, and the one that moves AI answers most.
- Get listed in the directories and review sites for your industry and country, with complete profiles.
- Ask happy customers for reviews on Google and on the review sites in your niche.
- Offer local media and industry blogs useful data, quotes or a guest article.
- Take part honestly in Reddit, Quora and industry forums where your customers ask questions.
BabyLoveGrowth and AutoSEO also place backlinks from partner sites, and BabyLoveGrowth's Reddit and Quora agents help with the last point.
Step 4: Keep your business facts consistent
AI assistants trust facts they see repeated the same way in many places. Use the same business name, address, phone number, services and prices on your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories. Add Organization and LocalBusiness structured data to your site so machines can read those facts directly.
Step 5: Measure what AI says about you
Once a month, ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the 10 questions your customers ask before buying, in a fresh chat each time. Note whether you're named, what's said and which competitors appear. Then fix what's missing.
Doing this by hand gets slow. Temso tracks it daily across ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews, compares you with competitors and suggests fixes. BabyLoveGrowth includes basic tracking of 10 prompts on its Grow plan.
How long it takes
Technical fixes in step 1 can show up within weeks, as AI search re-reads your site. Content and mentions take longer: expect clear movement in two to three months. Temso, for example, reports that its customer Revenue Hub Latam went from 7% to 36% of tracked AI answers within weeks of acting on its recommendations.
FAQ
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
No. There is no way to buy a place in ChatGPT's regular answers. You earn it by being easy to find, answering questions clearly and being mentioned by trusted sites.
Does SEO still matter for ChatGPT?
Yes. ChatGPT's web search draws heavily on Bing, and Google's AI Overviews use Google's index. Pages that rank and are trusted in search are far more likely to be cited by AI.
How do I check if ChatGPT mentions my business?
Ask it the questions your customers ask, in a new chat each time, and note the businesses it names. For daily tracking across several AI assistants, use a tool such as Temso.
Which tool helps most with getting recommended by AI?
For content and backlinks, BabyLoveGrowth, Soro or AutoSEO. For tracking and fixes, Temso. Use the picker on our homepage to see which fits your business and budget.
